Fergana is the capital of Fergana Region in eastern Uzbekistan, with a population of about 299,200 as of 2022. The modern city was founded in 1876 as a Russian garrison town and has grown into one of Uzbekistan's most important centers of oil refining, home to the region's first oil refinery, built in 1908.
