Gondar, also spelled Gonder, is a city in the North Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region, Ethiopia, north of Lake Tana on the Lesser Angereb River. Serving as capital of the Ethiopian Empire from the seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, Gondar is known for its collection of medieval castles and fortified compounds, sometimes called the Camelot of Africa, that make its Royal Enclosure a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
