Gweru is the capital of Zimbabwe's Midlands Province, founded in 1894 as a military outpost by Leander Starr Jameson and incorporated as a city in 1971. Known as the City of Progress, it had an urban population of 161,292 at the 2022 census and serves as a hub for beef cattle ranching and crop farming between Harare and Bulawayo on the country's main road and rail line. It is home to Midlands State University and the Gweru-Thornhill Air Base, Zimbabwe's air force training centre.
