Handan is a prefecture-level city in the southwest of Hebei province, China, the southernmost prefecture-level city in the province, bordering Shanxi to the west, Henan to the south and Shandong nearby. One of China's oldest cities, with a history stretching back over three thousand years as capital of the ancient state of Zhao, Handan today combines historic sites with a modern economy built on coal, iron and steel production.
