Ismailia

Ismailia is a city on the west bank of the Suez Canal in northeastern Egypt, capital of Ismailia Governorate. Khedive Ismail founded it in 1863 during construction of the Suez Canal and it took his name, later hosting a British military base after the 1882 Battle of Kafr el-Dawwar and the site of the 1973 Battle of Ismailia during the Yom Kippur War. Its population was estimated at 380,000 in 2024. The city is headquarters to the Suez Canal Authority, was the birthplace of the Muslim Brotherhood, founded there by Hassan al-Banna in 1928, and is home to the football club Ismaily SC.
