Jos is the administrative capital and largest city of Plateau State in north-central Nigeria, on the Jos Plateau about 179 kilometres from Abuja, with a population of 821,618 at the 2010 census. It became an important tin mining centre during British colonial rule after large cassiterite deposits were found nearby, and its comparatively cool climate has long made it a favoured holiday destination.
