Kabwe is the capital of Zambia's Central Province and of Kabwe District, with a population estimated at 288,598 in the 2022 census. Known as Broken Hill until 1966, the town was founded after lead and zinc deposits were discovered there in 1902, and it holds a claim to being the birthplace of Zambian politics, having been an important political center during the colonial period.
