Kagan is a city in Bukhara Region, Uzbekistan, about 12 kilometers from the historic city of Bukhara. It was built by Russia as a new settlement called New Bukhara when the Trans-Caspian railway reached the area in 1888, after the Emir of Bukhara agreed to the line crossing his territory only on condition that it stay at least 16 kilometers from Bukhara itself. Kagan became a town in its own right in 1929 and is known for a 19th-century palace of the Emir of Bukhara built there.
