Kairouan is a city in north-central Tunisia and capital of Kairouan Governorate, founded around 670 CE by the Umayyad general Uqba ibn Nafi as the first Arab garrison city in North Africa. It lies west of Sousse in a hot semi-arid region and had a population of 210,313 at the 2022 census; its historic monuments, including the Great Mosque, have earned the old city UNESCO World Heritage status.
