A major city in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy from 1469 to 1818 under the Kingdom of Kandy, situated amid hills on the Kandy plateau. It serves today as the administrative capital of the Central Province and is considered Sri Lanka's cultural capital for its architectural heritage, home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most important sites in the Buddhist world, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988; its Buddhist rulers historically resisted Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial expansion.
