Kariega

Kariega is a city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, about 30 kilometers northwest of Gqeberha, within the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area. It was founded on 25 April 1804 by landdrost Jacob Glen Cuyler and named Uitenhage after Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist, becoming a municipality in 1877; the city council voted to rename it Kariega in 2021, though the old name remains in wide use. The 2011 census recorded about 103,639 residents across 75.35 square kilometers. Kariega is home to South Africa's largest car factory, a Volkswagen assembly plant, alongside Goodyear tyre manufacturing and other automotive component makers, and the city became a center of resistance against apartheid, most notably after police opened fire on a funeral procession in 1985.
