Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal, situated in the Kathmandu Valley in the central part of the country. Known historically as Kantipur and, among the indigenous Newar people, as Yen, it has a 2021 census population of 845,767 within a metropolitan area of roughly four million.
