Keren, historically known as Sanhit, is the second largest city in Eritrea, about 91 kilometers northwest of the capital, Asmara, at an elevation of 1,590 meters. The city spreads across a wide basin surrounded on all sides by granite mountains, serves as the capital of the Anseba Region, and is home to a number of ethnic groups including the Bilen and Tigre peoples.
