Kition

Kition was an ancient city-kingdom on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, on the site of the modern city of Larnaca, with roots reaching back to the Late Bronze Age. It was an important center of Phoenician settlement and religion on Cyprus from around the ninth century BC, home to a major temple of Astarte, and later became one of the island's principal city-kingdoms under successive Egyptian, Persian and Hellenistic rule. The Stoic philosopher Zeno, founder of Stoicism, was born in the city in the fourth century BC and is commonly known as Zeno of Citium after it.
