Kitwe is Zambia's second largest city by population, after Lusaka, in Copperbelt Province, with a population of 661,901 at the 2022 census. Established in 1936 as a railway junction, it grew into one of the country's most developed commercial and industrial centres around a complex of copper mines on its edges, including the Nkana Cobalt Plant.
