Klerksdorp

Klerksdorp is a city in the North West Province of South Africa, about 165 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Mahikeng. It was founded in 1837 to 1838 when Voortrekkers settled on the banks of the Schoonspruit river, making it one of the oldest European settlements north of the Vaal River. Gold discovered in the district in 1885 drew a rush of prospectors, and after a decline the industry revived in 1932 during the Free State Gold Rush. The 2011 census recorded 186,515 residents in the city proper, and it is the birthplace of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
