Kolwezi is the capital of Lualaba Province in southern Democratic Republic of the Congo, west of Likasi, and had a population of 572,942 at the 2015 census, with an urban population of about 480,000. Founded in 1938 and granted city status in 1971, it is a major mining centre for copper and cobalt, with additional deposits of uranium, radium and lime minerals in the surrounding area.
