Ksar el-Kebir

Ksar el-Kebir is a city in Morocco's Larache Province, part of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, with 124,701 residents at the 2024 census, the country's 26th largest city. Near the Loukkos River, it was the site of the 1578 Battle of Alcacer Quibir, in which the Portuguese king Sebastian and the Moroccan sultan Abd al-Malik both died, a Moroccan victory that raised the country's international standing and, through Sebastian's death, helped bring about the temporary union of the Portuguese and Spanish crowns under Philip II; the city today is a major agricultural center supplying about a fifth of Morocco's sugar.
