Kunduz is a city in northern Afghanistan, capital of Kunduz Province and seat of Kunduz District, near the confluence of the Kunduz River and the Khanabad River in the historic Tokharistan region of Bactria, first mentioned in 329 BC. The municipality had an estimated population of 413,996 as of September 2025 across 112 square kilometers, about two thirds of it agricultural land, and the city has a domestic airport and an industrial park along with universities, hospitals, mosques, markets and restaurants.
