Lansing is the capital city of the U.S. state of Michigan and the sixth-largest city in the state by population. It was selected as the capital in 1847 for its central, more defensible location, and it transformed into a major industrial center with the rise of automobile manufacturers such as Oldsmobile and the REO Motor Car Company. Its economy today spans government, higher education, healthcare, insurance and manufacturing.
