Lubumbashi, formerly known as Elisabethville, is the second-largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in the country's southeasternmost province of Haut-Katanga near the border with Zambia. Founded as a colonial mining town, Lubumbashi sits at the heart of the copper- and cobalt-rich Copperbelt and remains the commercial and industrial capital of the DRC's mining sector.
