Makassar, formerly known as Ujung Pandang, is the capital of the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi and the largest city in the region of Eastern Indonesia, ranking as the country's fifth-largest urban center after Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Bandung. A historic trading port at the crossroads of routes between Southeast Asia and eastern Indonesia, Makassar remains a major port and commercial gateway to the country's eastern islands.
