Makeni is the largest city in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone and the capital of Bombali District, serving as the province's economic center. It is the fifth largest city in Sierra Leone by population, with 85,116 residents at the 2021 census, and lies approximately 110 miles east of Freetown. Makeni is home to the University of Makeni, the country's largest private university.
