Makurdi is the capital of Benue State in central Nigeria, situated in the country's Middle Belt region along the Benue River. Its urban population was recorded at 517,342 in 2017. The river divides the town into north and south banks connected by two bridges, a railway bridge built in 1932 and a dual carriageway bridge commissioned in 1978. The south bank holds the state Government House, the State and Federal Secretariats, a Central Bank of Nigeria regional headquarters and the Federal Medical Centre, while the north bank holds the Federal University of Agriculture, the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering and the headquarters of the 72 Airborne Battalion.
