Malakal is a city in South Sudan on the White Nile River, serving as the capital of Upper Nile State in the country's Greater Upper Nile region. It is also the headquarters of Malakal County, and from the 1970s to the late 1990s it served as the headquarters of the former Upper Nile Region.
