Manaus is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, the seventh-largest city in Brazil, with an estimated 2024 population of about 2.28 million spread across the Amazon rainforest. Built on the wealth of the late nineteenth-century rubber boom, symbolized by its ornate Amazon Theatre opera house, Manaus today functions as the main gateway to the Brazilian Amazon and a free-trade manufacturing zone deep in the rainforest, accessible mainly by river and air.
