Matadi is the chief sea port of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital of Kongo Central province, near the border with Angola. It sits on the left bank of the Congo River, 148 kilometres from its mouth and just below the rapids that make the river impassable for a long stretch upriver, and its population was recorded at 301,644 in a 2015 estimate.
