Matola is the largest suburb of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, adjoining its westernmost side, and is Mozambique's most populated city in its own right. It is the capital of Maputo Province and has had its own elected municipal government since 1998. Its population was 671,556 at the 2007 census and 1,032,197 at the 2017 census.
