Mbarara is a city in the Western Region of Uganda and the second largest city in the country after Kampala, divided into six boroughs: Kakoba, Kamukuzi, Nyamitanga, Biharwe, Kakiika and Nyakayojo. It is the main commercial center for most of southwestern Uganda and the seat of its district headquarters. Uganda's cabinet granted Mbarara city status in May 2019, effective from 1 July 2020. The name comes from a colonial mispronunciation of Emburara, a tall grass that once covered the area.
