Mexicali is the capital city of the Mexican state of Baja California and the seat of Mexicali Municipality. The city abuts the Mexico-United States border and the U.S. city of Calexico, California, with a population of 689,775 at the 2010 census and a combined Calexico-Mexicali metropolitan population of about 1,000,000. It functions as a regional economic and cultural hub for the border region known as the Californias.
