Baja California, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California, is the northwesternmost of Mexico's thirty-two federal entities, comprising the northern half of the Baja California peninsula plus Guadalupe Island, and became a state in 1952 after previously being the North Territory of Baja California. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Sonora and the Gulf of California to the east, Baja California Sur to the south, and the United States, specifically California and a short stretch of Arizona, to the north.
