Mexico City sits in the Valley of Mexico at over 2,200 meters elevation, in a basin ringed by volcanic mountains including Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, built atop the drained bed of Lake Texcoco. Its Aztec history as the imperial capital Tenochtitlan is treated further on the family's History Atlas; here it is described in its geographic frame, a lake-bed city whose soft, water-saturated soil causes uneven subsidence that still tilts its older buildings today.
