Mohale's Hoek

Mohale's Hoek is the capital of Mohale's Hoek district in Lesotho, in the country's south. The area was first inhabited by San people, then by the Baphuthi from around 1795, before King Moshoeshoe's brother Mohale was sent to administer the region in the 1830s; the original settlement was destroyed during the Seqiti War in 1867 and again during the Gun War of 1880, after which it was rebuilt at its present location with the involvement of a businessman named P.B. Jandrell. The 2016 census recorded about 40,040 residents. Had it not been destroyed during the Gun War, Mohale's Hoek would have been the second oldest of Lesotho's district headquarters towns, a mark of its early administrative importance.
