Monastir, also called Mestir, is a city on the central coast of Tunisia in the Sahel area, about 20 kilometers south of Sousse and 162 kilometers south of Tunis. Traditionally a fishing port, it is now a major tourist resort and serves as the capital of Monastir Governorate, with a population of about 93,306.
