Mutare, known as Umtali until 1982, is the capital of Manicaland Province and Zimbabwe's third largest city, near the border with Mozambique. It functions as a major trade hub with rail, pipeline and highway links connecting the port of Beira to Harare and the country's interior, with an economy centred on timber, papermaking, food processing and transport; the city was founded in 1897, granted city status in 1971, and had an urban population of 224,802 at the 2022 census.
