Nampula is the capital of Nampula Province in northern Mozambique, with a population of 743,125, making it the country's third largest city after Maputo and Matola. It lies inland, about 200 kilometers from the coast, amid plains and rocky outcrops, and serves as a major regional center for northern Mozambique as well as parts of central Mozambique and the border areas of Malawi and Tanzania.
