Nyala

Nyala is a city in South Darfur state in southwestern Sudan, once capital of the ancient Daju Empire, and chosen in 1932 by Sultan Adam Suleiman as the site of the British Administration Headquarters in Darfur for its water sources and topography. Its metropolitan population was estimated at 1,145,590 as of 2025, and its economy centres on textiles, processed food, leather goods and the gum arabic trade, alongside Nyala University. The Darfur conflict brought around 90,000 displaced people to the nearby Kalma camp, and during the 2023 Sudanese civil war the Rapid Support Forces captured eastern Nyala and its airport in April 2023.
