Oujda is a major city in northeastern Morocco, about 15 kilometers from the border with Algeria and 55 kilometers south of the Mediterranean coast, and the capital of the Oriental region. It was founded in 994 by the Berber chief Ziri ibn Atiyya of the Zenata Maghrawa tribe and passed through Almohad and Marinid rule before French forces occupied it as a military base in 1907 and 1908. The 2024 census recorded 506,224 residents, making it Morocco's ninth largest city. Oujda is a border trading hub known for its medina architecture, its Grand Mosque, and an annual International Festival of Gharnati Music, and it was named Arab Capital of Culture in 2018.
