Palembang is the capital city of the Indonesian province of South Sumatra, covering about 353 square kilometers on both banks of the Musi River. Believed to be the capital of the ancient maritime empire of Srivijaya over a thousand years ago, Palembang remains one of Indonesia's oldest cities and is known today for its ikat and songket textiles, its distinctive pempek fishcake cuisine, and its Ampera Bridge spanning the Musi.
