Panama City is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Panama, and the country's political and administrative center as well as a hub for banking and commerce. Founded by Pedro Arias de Ávila on 15 August 1519, the original city was destroyed by fire in 1671 and formally reestablished in 1673 at its present site; its population was 1,086,990 at the 2023 census.
