Patna, historically known as Pataliputra, is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Bihar, with a population of about 3.33 million as of 2026 United Nations estimates. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Patna was once the capital of the ancient Magadha and Maurya empires, and today serves as Bihar's administrative, commercial and educational center on the banks of the Ganges.
