Port Said is a port city in northeast Egypt, extending about 30 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast and straddling the northern entrance of the Suez Canal. Founded in 1859 during construction of the canal and named for the Egyptian ruler who authorized the project, Port Said grew into a major shipping and duty-free trading center whose economy remains closely tied to canal traffic and maritime commerce.
