Sfax is a major port city in Tunisia, about 270 kilometers southeast of the capital Tunis, and capital of Sfax Governorate. Its population was about 342,000 at the 2022 census, with an urban population of about 660,000. Founded in AD 849 on the ruins of the ancient town of Taparura, Sfax is Tunisia's second most populous city after Tunis and its largest fishing port, with an economy built on phosphate processing, olive and nut processing and international trade.
