Sharm El Sheikh is a city on the southern tip of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, administrative center of South Sinai Governorate on the Red Sea coast, with about 77,000 residents as of 2017. Once a fishing village and military outpost occupied by Israel during the 1956 Suez Crisis and again from 1967 to 1982, it was designated the City of Peace by President Hosni Mubarak in 1982 and developed into a major tourist destination, drawing more than 3 million visitors in 2024 for its warm climate and diving among some 250 coral reefs.
