Sokoto is a major city in northwestern Nigeria, near the confluence of the Sokoto and Rima rivers, and the capital of Sokoto State. Its population was about 743,400 in 2022, with an urban area of around 790,000. Sokoto was the historic seat of the Sokoto Caliphate and remains a major center of Islamic learning, home to the Sultan of Sokoto, who serves as spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims; the city trades in leather goods, hides and kola nuts.
