Suez is a seaport city in northeastern Egypt, on the north coast of the Gulf of Suez on the Red Sea, near the southern terminus of the Suez Canal. Rebuilt largely after suffering severe damage in the wars between Egypt and Israel in the twentieth century, modern Suez functions as a major petroleum-refining and industrial center whose fortunes are tied closely to shipping traffic through the canal that shares its name.
