Sumbawanga is a city in western Tanzania and the capital of Rukwa Region, with a district population of about 303,986 at the 2022 census. It functions as a supply and commercial hub for the surrounding region, home to Rukwa General Hospital and various government offices, with an economy based mainly on agriculture and small business. Most residents speak Kifipa and Kiswahili, and the name of the city is traditionally said to mean throw away your witchcraft, a reference to spiritual healers once associated with the area.
