Termez is the capital of Surxondaryo Region in southern Uzbekistan, with a population of 182,800 as of 2021. The site was settled as Alexandria on the Oxus, founded by Alexander the Great around 329 BC, and it later grew into a major center of Mahasamghika Buddhism during the Kushan period, an important stop on the Silk Road.
