Tlemcen is the second-largest city in northwestern Algeria after Oran and capital of Tlemcen Province, with a population of 173,531 recorded in the 2008 census. Under Zayyanid rule from 1236 to 1554 it became one of the most important economic and cultural centers of the region, linking trans-Saharan trade routes to Mediterranean commerce, and it developed leather, carpet and textile industries that it continues to export. Tlemcen remains renowned for its Andalusian cultural heritage and is a significant tourism destination in Algeria today.
