Toamasina, whose name means like salt or salty and which is known unofficially and in French as Tamatave, is the capital of the Atsinanana region on the east coast of Madagascar on the Indian Ocean. It is the country's chief seaport, situated 215 kilometers northeast of the capital and largest city Antananarivo, and had a population of 325,857 in 2018.
